Redifining Technology: What we need to learn

Did you know? Apple was Steve Job’s idea. “Oh come on! Everyone knows that.” This is what I guess most of yours reply could be. But wait. Do you know DNA’s model was first predicted by Watson and Crick? ‘What is that?’, I guess, would be the most obvious response, mentally if not literally. When Continue reading

Continue reading

Effective Altruism

When you see a beggar or a homeless person on the street asking for money, what do you do? Most of you reading this tend to give them a change or two as you pass them by without even giving your action a little thought. Others tend to be undecided and perhaps depending on mood, Continue reading

Unified theory of evolution

The unifying theme for much of modern biology is based on Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, the process of natural selection by which nature selects the fittest, best-adapted organisms to reproduce, multiply and survive. The process is also called adaptation, and traits most likely to help an individual survive are considered adaptive. As organisms change and new variants thrive, species emerge and evolve. In the 1850s, when Darwin described this engine of natural selection, the underlying molecular mechanisms were unknown. But over the past century, advances in genetics and molecular biology have outlined a modern, neo-Darwinian theory of how evolution works: DNA sequences randomly mutate, and organisms with the specific sequences best adapted to the environment multiply and prevail. Continue reading

Consequences of Gene Swap Between Bacteria and Humans

Before our understanding of DNA as genetic code, scientists knew that bacteria transferred it between the cells. In 1928, 25 years before the structure of DNA was solved, British bacteriologist Frederick Griffith demonstrated that live, non virulent bacteria could transform into virulent microbes after being incubated with heat killed virulent strain. Fifteen years later, Oswald Continue reading

Education in Nepal

The one constant of human society in all of history seems to be the never ending struggle between the privileged and the disadvantaged, both being the conditions largely hereditary. Contrary to what the political discourse would have us believe, the champions of both of those factions are almost always from the same class, the elite of our Continue reading

Continue reading

Crazy Ideas – Next Big Stop For Great Innovations

Talking of such crazy project Stephen Hawking seems to have grabbed one. He along with a Russian billionaire and several others have started a project to send LASER propelled tiny bots to Alpha Centauri to look for the possibilities of life or any habitable planets. The crazier part is to accomplish the mission within a mere 40 years which with current technology seems possible only in 100s of years. Leap of faith and determination fuel up such great visions which ultimately pay back humanity in various forms from engineering technologies to biology. Continue reading
